agano-ware-ceramic-bud-vase-sumi-to-yuki
Ceramic Flower Vase – Small

Four hundred years of clay, made into a vessel for flowers. A palm-sized ceramic vase from an Agano-ware kiln in Fukuoka. Agano ware began about 420 years ago and belongs to the line of tea ceramics counted among the Enshu Seven Kilns. Carrying on that tradition, the Koushin-Gama kiln makes its pieces as a parent-and-child workshop. In the 'Sumi to Yuki' (ink and snow) series, an ink-black glaze runs like a drop from the top edge of a snow-white body, drawing a scene that is never the same twice.

In the thin-walled style particular to Agano ware, it is lighter in the hand than it looks. It holds a single stem, of course, and has the presence to take branches or a few grasses together. It also works as a vessel for our Fragrass igusa sticks. Lift the flowers out and set it on a shelf, and it becomes a small, modern Japanese object.

• Form: small vase (one of a kind)
• Glaze: ink and snow (ink-black running over white)
• Material: Agano-ware ceramic (Koushin-Gama, Fukuoka)

Please note: The plant shown in the image is not included.
