About Ikehiko
Since 1886 — from Kyushu, Japan, to the world.

Our Mission
We grew up on tatami, so we know the kind of richer living that only real natural materials and true craftsmanship can create. We want to bring that to people everywhere — that is where Ikehiko began.
We make some pieces ourselves and carefully select others from artisans. Whether they come from our own workshops or from craftspeople across Kyushu, the standard is the same: real natural materials from Kyushu, shaped by genuine skill.
Natural igusa tatami, incense, ceramics — we bring lifestyle pieces born of Kyushu's nature and craft to the world.

How It All Began
In 1886, in Fukuoka, on the island of Kyushu in southern Japan, Ikegami Hikotaro began a business supplying tatami omote — the woven igusa surface — to tatami makers. That was the start of Ikehiko.
Working with igusa and making tatami with care, year after year, has added up to 140 years.
Times have changed and so has daily life. What has not changed is our honesty toward natural materials, right up to today.

A Tradition of 1,000 Years
Igusa is the natural grass woven into tatami. For more than 1,000 years, people in Japan have woven igusa into mats and brought it into daily life.
Its scent, its way of balancing humidity, the fresher air it helps create — Ikehiko carries that into the modern home.
Backed by 1,710 People Worldwide
Tatami, chosen around the world. Across four Kickstarter projects, more than 1,710 backers from over 50 countries came together.
It was the moment Japan's natural materials crossed borders and entered people's homes.

Together with Kyushu's Artisans
Ikehiko's range is more than our own products. We also deliver work made by Kyushu artisans who share our standards.

Baba Water Mill
Baba Water Mill, in Yame, Fukuoka, makes natural incense using only a waterwheel and local cedar and tabu wood.
Mr. and Mrs. Baba keep to a traditional method that uses no added fragrance or dye. It is sustainable making, drawing on Yame's forests and forestry.

Sumi to Yuki
Sumi to Yuki is a ceramics brand born from Agano ware, a designated traditional craft of Fukuoka.
Carrying on a 420-year technique, it makes vessels in ink-black and snow-white tones for modern life. Each piece, shaped by hand from local materials, wears a slightly different face.

KUSU HANDMADE
KUSU HANDMADE is a natural aroma brand made only from Kyushu camphor (kusunoki). By hand, it crafts camphor goods and natural camphor that help repel insects and freshen the air. Through the scent of natural materials, it offers living that is gentle on body, mind, family, and nature.

Trusted by Japan's Leading Retailers
Ikehiko's quality is trusted by more than 2000 companies across Japan.
Chosen by the country's leading retailers, that quality now travels to the world.
