Meet Our Artisans
Across Kyushu are artisans who have honed their craft and philosophy over many years. Ikehiko shares their purpose and brings their real handwork to the world.

Since 1886
Ikehiko Japan
Founded in 1886 in Fukuoka, on the island of Kyushu in southern Japan, Ikehiko began as a wholesaler supplying tatami omote to tatami makers. For 140 years, we have held to one thing: taking igusa grown in the soil of Kyushu and finishing it into tatami by hand.
Working alongside partners, we also grow some of our igusa ourselves, harvest it, and finish it into products — because we believe only those who grow the material can make real quality.

Since 1955
Baba Water Mill
Deep in the mountains of Yame, Fukuoka, there is a single water mill. Here, a husband and wife still grind cedar and tabu leaves using only the power of the waterwheel, making natural incense.
No fragrance, no dye, no chemicals — only the cedar and tabu leaves that the mountains of Yame have grown.
Calling himself "the forest's cleaner," Mr. Baba lives within nature through the seasons: foraging wild vegetables in spring, fishing for sweetfish in summer, digging wild yam in autumn, and hunting in winter. In a mill built more than a century ago, keeping to a time-honored method, he says, "As long as my body can move, I will carry this tradition on," and faces the waterwheel again today.

Sumi to Yuki / Takatsuru Yuta, Third-Generation Potter of Koushin-Gama
Agano ware is a designated traditional craft of Fukuoka with a 420-year history. Sumi to Yuki is the brand of its third-generation potter, Takatsuru Yuta.
Ink-black and snow-white — two opposing colors resting quietly together in a single vessel — is where the brand begins. Guided by five principles, among them a sense of flow, being handmade, and using local materials, Takatsuru Yuta shapes each piece with care. Even in the same form, no two are alike. We hope these once-in-a-lifetime vessels, made by nature and time, become part of the quiet happiness of your home.

Since 1971
KUSU HANDMADE
The camphor trees of Kyushu's forests hold a power long known: repelling insects, neutralizing odors, and a scent that calms the mind.
KUSU HANDMADE makes the most of that power, using only Kyushu camphor. Without chemicals, relying on the power of nature alone, it crafts each product with care to bring order to daily life. Incense, hangers, skincare, bath goods — every product carries the wish to bring the gift of camphor to every part of life. A scent born of Kyushu's forests, for your everyday.
