A waterwheel grinds, and cedar leaf burns. Deep in the mountains of Okuyame, Fukuoka, this incense is made by pounding cedar leaf with a waterwheel turned by nothing but the river's flow. No electricity, no gas, the only power is the water. Nothing is added, no fragrance, no coloring, no chemicals, and the only materials are cedar leaf and tabu leaf from Yame.

Light it and a plain, nostalgic scent rises, like a campfire in the forest. Neither too strong nor too faint, it folds into reading, a cup of tea, or the time before sleep. It is made by Baba Water Mill, founded in 1918, a husband and wife and a single waterwheel keeping a hundred-year memory of the Yame forest. One stick for a morning breath, a small gesture to begin the day.

• Net weight: 90 g (3 bundles of 30 g)
• About 60 to 70 sticks per bundle

Please note: The incense holder is not included with the incense.

Made by Baba Water Mill
Deep in the mountains of Yame, Fukuoka, a husband and wife still grind cedar and tabu leaves by waterwheel alone — no fragrance, no dye, no chemicals, just what the mountains have grown. Calling himself "the forest's cleaner," Mr. Baba lives by the seasons — foraging, fishing, hunting — in a mill built over a century ago. "As long as my body can move, I will carry this tradition on."

Why Are Japanese Rooms So Calming?

The answer is tatami. Its grassy scent, the way it balances humidity, the way it helps keep the air fresh — a natural flooring Japan has lived with for centuries.

Ikehiko Quality

We make some pieces ourselves and carefully select others from artisans. Whether they come from our own workshops or from craftspeople across Kyushu, the standard is the same: real natural materials from Kyushu, shaped by genuine skill.
