Ikehiko has been part of tatami craft in Fukuoka since 1886, and its real tatami surface draws in the moisture that gathers under a futon and releases it, keeping the bed dry through the night.

In the morning, lift the futon and the mat that stays becomes a place to meditate or read. At 3.5 to 5.7 kg it is light, easy for one person to fold and store, and it connects into a family size. The more you sleep on igusa, the deeper its scent and amber color grow.

How to Use

Everyday bedding. Lay it under a futon for a floor-style bedroom with no bed.

How to Care

Everyday care

Remove dust with a vacuum, a broom, or a dry cloth, working along the grain of the weave.
Igusa draws in moisture, so on dry, sunny days open a window and let air through to help the mat last.

If it gets dirty

Blot the spot gently with a firmly wrung-out cloth, then dry it right away with a clean dry cloth.
Igusa does not take well to water. Do not leave it damp or wash it with water, as this can cause stains and discoloration.

Moisture and mold

In humid seasons, air it out now and then in a shaded, well-ventilated spot.
Direct sun can fade the color, so always dry it in the shade.

Note: With sun exposure the color shifts from green to a soft amber. This is igusa's natural aging, not a flaw.
