One mat, and a room remakes itself many times a day. Yoga in the morning, a child's play space at noon, a bed for guests at night: a three-fold mat of domestically grown igusa. Open it out and it is a tatami room; fold it and it slips into a gap in the closet.

Ikehiko has been part of tatami craft in Fukuoka since 1886, and tailors this real tatami surface from Kyushu-grown igusa. The non-slip backing keeps it from sliding on wood floors, and the surface is gentle enough for a baby to crawl on. Out when you need it, gone when you don't, so even a small city home can make room for a little Japanese calm whenever you like.

Materials & Origin

Material: 100% domestically grown natural igusa (Japanese rush)
Backing: 10 mm non-woven polyester with a non-slip finish. Works on any wood floor and is gentle and safe for babies crawling and playing.

A natural scent carrying phytoncide, the calming compound trees release, like the quiet of a forest.

How to Use

In the morning, open it out for yoga or stretching, then fold it away when you finish.
By day, a play mat for children. The non-slip backing keeps crawling and play safe.
On a guest's night, a simple bed for visitors (folded, it takes up about one corner of a closet).
Carry it out to a sunroom or veranda for a nap (mind very dry air).

How to Care

Everyday care

Remove dust with a vacuum, a broom, or a dry cloth, working along the grain of the weave.
Igusa draws in moisture, so on dry, sunny days open a window and let air through to help the mat last.

If it gets dirty

Blot the spot gently with a firmly wrung-out cloth, then dry it right away with a clean dry cloth.
Igusa does not take well to water. Do not leave it damp or wash it with water, as this can cause stains and discoloration.

Moisture and mold

In humid seasons, air it out now and then in a shaded, well-ventilated spot.
Direct sun can fade the color, so always dry it in the shade.

Note: With sun exposure the color shifts from green to a soft amber. This is igusa's natural aging, not a flaw.
