Real tatami, made for yoga and meditation. Ikehiko has been part of Fukuoka's tatami craft for more than 140 years, and weaves this mat from natural igusa (Japanese rush) grown in Kyushu, southern Japan. Unlike a synthetic mat, its supple spring pushes back underfoot and supports your core from below, and your hands and feet stay put even in a sweaty flow.

Unroll it and a sweet, green scent of living grass rises up, the kind you meet in an old Japanese inn, and with each breath the spot becomes a place to settle. The more you use igusa, the more it shifts from green to amber. A year from now, it holds your practice woven into it.

Natural (undyed): The color of igusa itself, left undyed. Cut and woven as it is, each stalk keeps its own light and shade, and the greenish natural tone mellows to a soft amber over time. Like spreading summer grass under bare feet, it is the luxury of doing nothing at all.

How to Use

Roll it out in the morning before your coffee, and start the day with your breath.
Your own mat for yoga, Pilates, stretching, and meditation.
The give of the tatami supports your knees and wrists, so floor poses feel comfortable.
When you are done, roll it up and stand it against the wall, where the igusa becomes part of the room.
Good for outdoor yoga on a veranda or balcony, too (keep it out of direct sun and very dry air).

How to Care

Everyday care

Remove dust with a vacuum, a broom, or a dry cloth, working along the grain of the weave.
Igusa draws in moisture, so on dry, sunny days open a window and let air through to help the mat last.

If it gets dirty

Blot the spot gently with a firmly wrung-out cloth, then dry it right away with a clean dry cloth.
Igusa does not take well to water. Do not leave it damp or wash it with water, as this can cause stains and discoloration.

Moisture and mold

In humid seasons, air it out now and then in a shaded, well-ventilated spot.
Direct sun can fade the color, so always dry it in the shade.

Note: With sun exposure the color shifts from green to a soft amber. This is igusa's natural aging, not a flaw.
