No Japanese-style room? Make your own tatami corner. These borderless, modular placement-tatami panels combine freely from a single piece and spread to fit the shape of your room. They bring together Ikehiko's undyed igusa (the company has been part of tatami craft in Fukuoka since 1886), a soft core, and a non-slip backing.

Gentle enough for a baby to crawl on, they suit a quiet hour of meditation or reading as easily as a family gathering. On top of a wood floor, they make the kind of life that lives close to the ground, where bare feet feel good.

Carrying on the igusa-weaving tradition that Fukuoka, on the island of Kyushu, is known for, Ikehiko has been supplying tatami omote since 1886. For 140 years, the company has held to hand-finishing every piece from Kyushu-grown igusa — and growing some of that igusa itself, alongside partner farmers.

Materials & Origin

Material: Undyed natural igusa, made in Japan (left undyed to keep its natural scent)
Origin: Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan
Core: 10 mm wood board plus bonded foam, for balanced cushioning and durability
Surface weave: 2 x 2 weave, for a soft, comfortable feel
Backing: 2 mm non-woven polyester with a non-slip finish, to keep it from sliding on wood floors

How to Care

Everyday care

Remove dust with a vacuum, a broom, or a dry cloth, working along the grain of the weave.
Igusa draws in moisture, so on dry, sunny days open a window and let air through to help the mat last.

If it gets dirty

Blot the spot gently with a firmly wrung-out cloth, then dry it right away with a clean dry cloth.
Igusa does not take well to water. Do not leave it damp or wash it with water, as this can cause stains and discoloration.

Moisture and mold

In humid seasons, air it out now and then in a shaded, well-ventilated spot.
Direct sun can fade the color, so always dry it in the shade.

Note: With sun exposure the color shifts from green to a soft amber. This is igusa's natural aging, not a flaw.
