The smell of a tatami room. That clear, green scent of igusa that brings back the Japanese room you stayed in, now palm-sized to carry with you. This air freshener is made from the same domestically grown igusa as tatami, rolled up small in Kyushu, southern Japan. The phytoncide and vanillin in igusa give off a faint scent of forest and vanilla, with no synthetic fragrance at all.

Rather than masking a smell, the igusa draws in moisture and the things that cause odors, a clean way to settle the air. Rolled tight the scent is quiet; opened out it rises more, for an entryway, a car, or a desk. Wrapped in four ukiyo-e designs (tatami, kabuki, calligraphy, and Hokusai), it is a small set for bringing a little of Japan home.

One set of four assorted designs:
• Tatami: a simple, natural design based on traditional tatami.
• Kabuki: a bold design after the ukiyo-e actor portrait of Otani Oniji as the servant Edobei.
• Kanji: a design built from beautiful Japanese calligraphy.
• Hokusai: a two-sided design of 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' and 'Fine Wind, Clear Morning' (Red Fuji) from Hokusai's Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.

Made by Ikehiko Japan
Carrying on the igusa-weaving tradition that Fukuoka, on the island of Kyushu, is known for, Ikehiko has been supplying tatami omote since 1886. For 140 years, the company has held to hand-finishing every piece from Kyushu-grown igusa — and growing some of that igusa itself, alongside partner farmers.

Why Are Japanese Rooms So Calming?

The answer is tatami. Its grassy scent, the way it balances humidity, the way it helps keep the air fresh — a natural flooring Japan has lived with for centuries.

Ikehiko Quality

We make some pieces ourselves and carefully select others from artisans. Whether they come from our own workshops or from craftspeople across Kyushu, the standard is the same: real natural materials from Kyushu, shaped by genuine skill.
